The Citrus Accord — Sparkling Freshness & Energy

The citrus or hesperidia accord is among the oldest in perfumery, forming the foundation of eau de cologne since the 18th century. Built around the cold-pressed oils of citrus fruits, these compositions deliver instant freshness, clean energy, and universal appeal. Their challenge lies in longevity — citrus top notes are famously fleeting.

Core Architecture

A citrus accord typically opens with an explosive burst of volatile terpenes (limonene, linalyl acetate), supported by aromatic herbs in the heart, and anchored by woods, musks, or ambers in the base to compensate for the ephemeral top.

Key Materials

  • Lemon oil / Limonene — The archetypal citrus note. Bright, clean, short-lived.
  • Bergamot oil — The king of citrus in perfumery. Adds complexity, slight floral-tea nuance.
  • Orange oil (sweet and bitter) — Warm, rounded citrus. Bitter orange (neroli) bridges to florals.
  • Grapefruit / Nootkatone — Tart, slightly sulfurous. Modern and distinctive.
  • Linalyl acetate — Fresh lavender-citrus bridge. Key to fougere-citrus blends.
  • Citral — Intense lemon-verbena character. Powerful but requires careful dosing.
  • Aldehyde C-12 MNA — Extends citrus freshness into the heart.

Sub-Families

Eau de Cologne

The original citrus accord: bergamot, lemon, neroli, rosemary, lavender. Designed to be splashed liberally. Light, ephemeral, refreshing.

Citrus Aromatic

Citrus combined with herbs (rosemary, basil, thyme). Mediterranean character. Pairs naturally with the fougere accord.

Citrus Woody

Citrus top notes grounded with vetiver, cedar, or sandalwood. Better longevity than pure citrus. Modern masculine staple.
