MODERN ACCORD

The Woody Amber Accord — Modern Masculinity

The Woody Amber accord emerged in the late 1990s as the dominant structure in contemporary masculine perfumery, largely thanks to the discovery and popularization of ambroxan and Iso E Super. Unlike traditional woody notes (sandalwood, cedar), these synthetic ‘woody ambers’ create a smooth, skin-like, radiant effect that projects without harshness. This accord is the secret behind ‘your skin but better’ fragrances that seem to hover around the wearer.

Accord Structure

Key Molecules

  • Iso E Super (Tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes) — The velvety, skin-like woody molecule that became a modern classic; used at unusually high concentrations (up to 50% in Molecule 01)
  • Ambroxan (Cetalox) — Derived from ambergris chemistry; warm, mineral, slightly salty amber with extraordinary projection
  • Cashmeran — Musky-woody with a soft, cashmere-like quality
  • Cedramber — Cedar-amber hybrid molecule, adds warmth without heaviness

Supporting Players

  • Cedar (Virginian/Atlas) — Pencil-like dryness, provides structure
  • Vetiver — Smoky-earthy grounding element
  • Sandalwood (synthetic) — Creamy, milky base for softness
  • White musk — Clean, laundry-like skin scent that blends everything together
